Earthquake damaged School building for children with impaired hearing in Sindhuli district reconstructed and handed over to community
The inaugural and handover ceremony of reconstructed school building of Shree Nava Jyoti Deaf Secondary School, Sindhuli held on Jan 6, 2019 in presence of Honorable Chief Minister of Province 3 Mr. Dormani Paudel. The building was damaged during 2015 Gorkha Earthquake.
Shree Nava Jyoti Deaf Secondary School was established 15 years back in 2060B.S, targeting the deaf students of Sindhuli and other districts nearby. The school is providing education for 106 deaf students from 10 districts with hostel facilitities.
Addressing the inauguration ceremony, chief guest Mr. Paudel highlighted the importance of this type of school specifically focusing for disable students and his assurance in supporting these type of schools from province level.
NSET had provided technical assistance in design and construction supervision of school under Australian Aid funded NSET- Plan consortium project “Building Back Safer School for all”. Total 12 School buildings were constructed under the project in Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Sindhuli, Sindhupalchwok, Dolakha and Makwanpur district.
Two 3-room block, one 2-room block of single story confined masonry structure with metal truss and CGI sheet and separate toilet and bathroom for male and female students was constructed under the project. The earthquake resistant school blocks are made as disable friendly as possible with the provision of ramp, verandah with disable friendly concrete tiles, electric indicators in each class rooms and toilets for deaf students and disable friendly commode in toilet. The overall construction works was carried out by School Management Committee under the construction supervision of NSET.
Addressing the ceremony, Dr. Ramesh Guragain, Deputy Executive Director of NSET highlighted the importance and construction of disaster resilient school buildings and residential buildings. He also stated that NSET will be continuously supporting the municipalities and schools in DRR activities which will ultimately support to develop disaster resilient society in the Nation.
