A five-day program “Training on Nepal National Building Code (NNBC) for Municipal Engineers of Bhimeshwor, Neelakantha, and Gorkha Municipalities” has been kicked off in Kathmandu on April 21, 2022. Under USAID’s Tayar Nepal, NSET is conducting the training program. The main objective of the training has been to develop knowledge on provisions of NBC and build the capacity of municipal engineers / technicians so that they could check and verify the design, drawing and monitor construction works as per updated NBC requirements.
Speaking at the brief inaugural session, Mr. Manoj Nakarmi, Senior Divisional Engineer at Building Code Section of DUDBC remarked, “effective implementation of National Building Code is critical for Nepal to enhance disaster safety as the country faces various kind of hazards and is in high seismic risks”. Mr. Nakarmi added, “role of DUDBC is to ensure the stringent implementation of NBC in the country through various means such as policy level decisions, technical assistance, capacity enhancement trainings, awareness promotion and monitoring & evaluation as well as coordination & cooperation among like-minded organizations. For promotion of safer construction culture in the society, cooperation of all the stakeholders and organizations is important,” he added.
The training is expected to make the participants familiar with the Nepal National Building Code (NNBC), help understand the need & importance of implementation of Building Code at local level and incorporate the requirements of Nepal National Building code in building permit process in their municipalities.
Ms. Tammie Harris, Chief of Party from Tayar Nepal remarked, “Tayar Nepal started to work in Building Code during the 2nd year of the program. The activities were like holding interactions with municipal engineers regarding gaps and challenges regarding implementation of Building Code and updating the Building Code and building manual”. Ms. Harris added, “various activities are on pipeline based on the preceding year’s activities regarding NBC within the full tenure of Tayar Nepal.”
Mr. Surya Narayan Shrestha, Executive Director of NSET highlighted importance of the implementation of building code in Nepal and its progress and achievements. “While providing trainings on implementation of building code, we focused so far only on structural aspects for a house, but now we have incorporated other aspects relevant to making house more comfortable and user-friendly” Mr. Shrestha thanked DUDBC and Tayar Nepal for the opportunity to develop this new course and piloting it.
To start with, Ms. Hima Shrestha, Training Implementation Lead from NSET highlighted the objectives of the training program.
Apart from imparting the knowledge on NBC including its new updates, the training is also expected to provide important feedback so that it can been incorporated in the course. For this, it has been planned to collect the feedback from the participants at the end of every day of the training.
The participants of the training are Engineers and Sub-Engineers from Municipalities and Department of Urban Development and Building Construction (DUDBC). There are altogether 16 engineers/technicians participating the course.
